The earliest inhabitants of the area were the Slav and Germanic
people, who were overrun eventually by the Magyars from eastern
Europe. During the 15th to 17th Centuries, Hungary suffered
several Turkish invasions and by 1697 Austria dominated the
country. Internal independence was obtained in 1867 with the
establishment of a dual Austrian and Hungarian monarchy. With
the defeat of Austria-Hungary at the end of World War I in 1918,
Hungary lost most of its territory to neighboring countries. In
1920, after political unrest, Admiral Nicholas Horthy was elected
as Regent of Hungary with the re-establishment of the monarchy.
During World War II, Hungary was allied with Germany. In 1944,
Soviet troops occupied the country and in 1947 the communists
established Imre Nagy as Premier. In 1956 Erno Gero was
appointed Communist Party Secretary. Demonstrations followed and
open revolt shortly thereafter. On November 4, 1956, 200,000
Soviet troops and 2,500 tanks occupied the country. 200,000
civilians fled to the west and finally in 1963, a sweeping
amnesty freed many who were captured during the 1956 revolts.
Soviet troops are still stationed in Hungary and Hungarian troops
participated in the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. In 1968,
economic reforms were launched initiating local planning and
profit incentives for productivity. Today, productivity and
living standards are much improved with major cultural freedoms
and small private enterprises tolerated. @
